Telford and Wrekin Social Media Surgery

Last night I got back into the Social Media Surgery Swing by helping out at the Telford Social Media Surgery. (Info here: http://socialmediasurgery.com/surgeries/telford-wrekin)

Social media surgery is an event where people who want to learn more about using the web to campaign, make noise or gather people get together with people who know what they’re talking about. They’re very relaxed and focus on practical solutions rather than airy fairy theory. You can get a blog set up or a twitter feed set up in one surgery and be inspired to keep it going. I love them because offering the event for free means that voluntary groups, community groups and individuals don’t get screwed over by the Snake Oil Salespeople telling them that if you pay them lots of money they’ll make your group go “viral” or get you squillions of hits on your website. Snake Oil Salespeople make me angry.

The ones in Birmingham were great because they were monthly and I’m hoping that Shropshire will follow their lead by going monthly. It’s a great event; I get a kick out of being helpful and it’s great for the people I’m helping because they can see results very quickly.

By the time I got home I was all talked out and had an early night but it was a great session! Hopefully there’ll be more to come.
