It’s raining outside and it’s been “one of those summers” so it means my thoughts turn to the Pink Picnic in Shrewsbury.
Last year the first Pink Picnic was a creative and inclusive response to friends saying that Shrewsbury doesn’t feel like a welcoming place for LGBT people and seeing less than positive letters to the Shropshire Star. I’m well aware that a picnic in a park isn’t going to resolve issues facing LGBT people in Shrewsbury but it’s a nice way to gather people together, let people know that things are ok because, look, here’s some LGBT people, their friends, their family and, here, have some cake.
Shrewsbury is a lovely place, Quarry Park is beautiful and the people who came to Pink Picnic 2011 were awesome. Pink Picnic 2012 will be just as welcoming and just as informal and a lovely no-frills way to celebrate the diversity of community. (Plus there will be cake) There’s no specific entertainment lined up, so please bring your own food, drinks and games. (Did I mention cake?)
